Support Customers

Customers

Customers are a lightweight way to tie your work to the people or businesses you do it for. Attach a task list (or a project) to a customer, then open that customer to see every list and project connected to them. It’s built for service businesses that work job-by-job — an auto shop, a caterer, a landscaper, a property manager — where “who is this for?” is how you think about the work.

Customers are not a full CRM: there are no deals, pipelines, or messaging. It’s just a name (optionally with contact details) you can attach to work and look up later.

Customers are available on every plan. An account owner can turn the feature off entirely (see Feature Flags).

Permissions

ActionUser / Team UserAdmin / Team AdminRoot
View customers
Create a customer (inline or from roster)
Attach / change the customer on a list✓ (lists they can edit)
Edit a customer’s details

Members with a custom role that includes customer management access can also edit customers.

Note: Customers are scoped to the account. All members share the same customer list.

How it works

Creating a customer

There are two places to create one:

  1. Inline while creating or editing a list or project — In the Create list / Edit list modal (and the project modals), use the Customer field. Type a name and, if it doesn’t already exist, select Create “name”. Only a name is required — the customer is created and attached in one step.
  2. From the Customers page — Tap New Customer (desktop) or the + (mobile) to open a form with the name (required) plus optional phone, email, address, and notes.

The picker surfaces existing matches as you type, so you can pick an existing customer instead of making a duplicate. Unlike tags, two customers may share the same name (real businesses sometimes do) — the system won’t block it.

Importing customers from a CSV (Admin / Root only)

If you’re moving a customer list over from a spreadsheet or another tool, use Import on the Customers page (next to New Customer). This is an Admin/Root action (or a custom role with customer management) — single/inline create stays open to every member, but bulk import does not.

  1. Download the template (optional) — a sample CSV with the name, phone, email, address, notes columns.
  2. Drop or browse for your CSV. You don’t have to match our column names — we auto-detect common headers (e.g. “Company”/“Business”/“Client” for name, “Cell”/“Tel” for phone, “E-mail”, “Street Address”). If the address is split across City, State, and Zip columns (as exports from other tools often are), those are detected and joined into one address automatically. Only a name column is required; the rest are optional.
  3. Review the preview. Every row is editable, and rows with no name are flagged and will be skipped. Add or remove rows as needed.
  4. Skip customers that already exist (checkbox, on by default) — rows whose name matches a current customer are skipped so re-running a file doesn’t create duplicates. Uncheck it to allow duplicates.
  5. Import. You’ll see how many were imported, how many were skipped, and any rows that couldn’t be created.

Attaching a customer to a list or project

Use the Customer field in the list or project modal. Start typing to search existing customers and select one, or clear the selection to detach. A list has one customer at a time. Once attached, the customer name shows as a chip on the list card and detail.

On the task list detail, the attached customer appears in the sidebar with quick Call, Email, and Directions buttons — so a crew member out on a job can tap to phone the customer, email them, or open the address in Maps without leaving the list. Each button only appears when that detail is filled in (no phone number, no Call button). Tapping the customer’s name still opens their full detail page.

Lists in a project inherit the project’s customer

When the Projects feature is on, the project is the source of truth for the customer on the lists inside it — so a project and its lists can never point at different customers. If a task list belongs to a project that has a customer, the list’s customer is set to the project’s and shown read-only in the list modal, with a note like “Customer set by the project.”

  • Change a project’s customer → every list in that project updates to match. You’re asked to confirm first, since it replaces the customer on all of them.
  • A project with no customer → its lists’ customers are freely editable, each on its own.
  • Clear a project’s customer → the lists keep whatever customer they had, and the field becomes editable again (nothing is wiped).
  • Remove a list from a project → it keeps its customer, editable again.

The Customers page

Open Customers from the sidebar (/app/customers). It lists your customers with a search box; tap a customer to open their detail page. Like the other list views, you can switch between card grid, card stack, and table layouts (and a comfortable/compact density) using the view switch — your choice is remembered.

Customer detail

The detail page opens with the customer’s name as the title, followed by a Contact card showing their phone, email, address, and notes (phone and email are tap-to-call and tap-to-email). Below that, their work splits into tabs:

  • Projects (shown when the Projects feature is on) and Task Lists — each tab shows a list view (the same card/table layouts) of the projects or task lists attached to this customer, each linking straight to it, with its own search box and a Filters panel (status, and — for task lists — tags, sort, and due). This is the payoff: one place to see the customer’s whole history with you.
  • Edit (in the Contact card header) opens a form to update the name, phone, email, address, and notes.

Recurring lists

If a recurring list has a customer, every list it spawns inherits that customer automatically — so recurring work for a client stays attributed to them.

Turning the feature off

An account owner can disable customers under Account → Feature Settings → Customers. When off, the Customer field, the Customers page, and the sidebar link all disappear. Existing customer links are preserved and reappear if the feature is switched back on.

Support notes

  • Customer field is missing — Check that the account owner hasn’t turned Customers off in Feature Settings. It’s on by default for every plan.
  • A User can’t edit a customer — Creating and attaching customers is open to all members, but editing a customer’s details is Admin/Root only (or a custom role with customer management). A User can still create a customer and attach it to a list.
  • Duplicate customer names — Allowed by design. The picker shows existing matches first to help avoid accidental dupes, but it won’t stop you from creating two customers with the same name.
  • Project customer only shows on Business — Projects are a Business-plan feature, so the customer-on-a-project experience is only reachable on Business. Attaching customers to task lists works on every plan.
