How it works
- Only Root can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel a subscription.
- Clicking Upgrade opens a Stripe Checkout page in a browser tab. After payment succeeds, the account is automatically upgraded and the relevant features are unlocked.
- Plan changes take effect within a few seconds of a successful payment.
- On cancellation or failed payment, the account reverts to Free and all paid features are disabled.
Free trial
Paid plans include a 30-day free trial the first time an account subscribes.
- Starting a paid plan opens Stripe Checkout, which requires a card but does not charge during the trial. Checkout clearly shows the trial length, that $0 is due today, and the date/amount of the first charge.
- The account gets full access to that plan’s features for the whole trial (it shows as the paid plan with a “trial” status).
- At the end of the trial the card is charged automatically and the subscription continues. Cancel any time before then (Account Settings → Billing) to avoid the charge — the account returns to the Free plan.
- The trial is one per customer — cancelling and re-subscribing does not grant a second free trial.
- The Free plan is separate: it needs no card and lasts forever (limited features). “Free to start” refers to the Free plan; the trial is a time-limited taste of a paid plan.
The trial length is configurable per environment (the
PAID_TRIAL_DAYSsetting), so it may differ from 30 days for a promotion. Set0to turn trials off. The marketing pricing page reads a matching value — keep the two in sync.
Where billing is managed (web vs. mobile apps)
- Plans, upgrades, downgrades, and payment are managed on the web app only (open Ziptask in a browser at your account URL).
- The iOS and Android apps do not sell or change subscriptions. On mobile you can still see your current plan, but there is no Upgrade or Manage-billing button — purchase and payment happen on the web. This follows the Apple App Store and Google Play rules for subscriptions.
- Any plan you buy on the web works everywhere: once an account is upgraded, the paid features unlock automatically in the mobile apps too.
- If a payment fails, the mobile apps show a general “billing issue” notice; the full details and the option to update your payment method are on the web.
- Welcome email: when someone creates a new account (email/password or Google/Apple sign-in), the account owner receives a welcome email that links to the web app where they can compare plans and upgrade.
Support notes
- If a user’s plan didn’t update after a successful payment, ask them to wait a few minutes and refresh — plan changes are applied automatically once the payment is confirmed. If it still hasn’t updated, contact support.
- Root can access the billing portal (cancel, update card, view invoices) from Account Settings → Billing on the web app.
- If a user asks how to upgrade from their phone, tell them to open Ziptask in a web browser and upgrade there — the mobile apps intentionally don’t include purchasing. The new plan will then be active on their phone automatically.
